Green Glass Green is an initiative started by The Hong Kong Dumper Truck Drivers Association and funded by the Hong Kong Government’s Environment and Conservation Fund.
The Hong Kong Dumper Truck Drivers Association is a union. Many of our members haul construction and demolition waste from construction sites to transfer stations and landfills.
Witnessing first hand the amount of the waste glass dumped at the fills, the Association launched this project as a step towards a greener and more sustainable Hong Kong.
The glass collection has been run since June 2010 and is focused on raising awareness about the problem of waste glass, while actively collecting bottles for recycling.

Congratulations for doing a good job! I hope you can carry on your good work after April 2011. Helping recycle the glass bottles and preventing them being dumped in landfills is great. .

Thank you for your support. We are struggling to extend the project and the collection point. In this regard, please express your view to the govt departments concerned such as FEHD and EPD for the need of glass recycling.

Hello April,
I am really interested in what you are trying to accomplish and would love to be more involved in your movement to make this happen. There is such a need for this and I applaud you all for taking the first steps to educating the public and starting this program. I am an expat living here with 7 years of experience working in the non-profit world and by chance I have a lot of free time on my hands. In September I am planning on starting a masters program for Environmental Science Management. Can you please let me know how I can help?
Best wishes,
Steve

Hi Steve,
Recycling is a challenging task in HK, glass reycling in particular.
I’m glad that you are interested and perhaps committed in glass recycling advocacy. At the moment we do need volunteers at the collection point. The duty is to sort out bottles from the mixed waste. The task is physically demanding and a kind of dirty job. We are also organizing a carnival on July 9 (Sat) afternoon to promote glass recycling in the community. We are expecting games, talks, whatever fun and inspiring to be there. Please let me know of your initiative involvement.

Hi,
We are a sustainable design consulting company. We are carrying out some private residential building projects and want to suggest those buildings to place drums in order to collect the waste glass. So I want to know how you can help us to achieve it. Ms. Wong, the volunteer, said if the residential join your plan, you will come to ship the glass regularly. Is that right? And will you also provide the drums?
Can you provide me with your direct contact?
Thanks,
Carmen Lai

We are trying to accommodate those concerned with glass recycling as much as possible particularly the delivery of waste glass. Please provide us with the location of the estate, how much glass expected to be collected monthly. Transportation is very costly and the said information is necessarily for our consideration.
We advise the participating estates to prepare its own collection bin (660-litre). For logistic arrangement, we are happy to discuss with the estate representatives concerned.
My name is sarfraz and Im looking and job in your company please do reply me ,either you have a job or not
Thanks
I think I have replied you on the phone this afternoon. The current vacancy is filled. As we are looking for development so please send resume if you are interested in this kind of job.
Great website with helpful info on where to recycle glass. I’ll be checking out collection points both Shanghai Street and Weee recycling in Kowloon Bay as two places to take my used bottles.
Cheers,
Mish
I live in shatin, work in Wong Chuk Hang, and have a significant qty of glass bottles for recycling.
Any collection locations easily accessed by car so I can dispose regularly.

Hi there!
I met up with some of your volunteers and was inspired by the effort your organization puts into recycling glass in Hong Kong. I am a teacher at an international primary school in Kowloon Tong and our school would like to partner with your organization in running a Glass Drive Event. For the month of May, the students would bring in any glass bottles that they use and we will collect it at school. Also, we will run a coin drive to raise money to support the work of your organization. We will organize everything, including the collecting and fundraising. However, I am wondering HOW we can deliver the collected bottles to you, because we will probably have a substantial number. Would it be possible for you to pick-up the bottles at our school at the end of the event? As well, would it be possible for you to come and share what you do with our students? Thank you and I look forward to your reply! ~Ms. Wendy Yu
Hi Ms Yu,
Your school project sounds very interesting to me. How amny glass bottles you are expecting? Is it lung run? We are happy to co-work with school to promote glass recycling in terms of educational activities and collection facilities. Looking forward to your update.
April
Hi April,
We have about 200 students in the school, so if every student brings in 3-4 bottles on average, we will have close to 1000 glass bottles. As well, we would like to run a coin drive to donate towards your organization. It would be great if we could work together to coordinate the final pick-up of the bottles, as well as any educational activities you may have for primary students (age 8-11.) We can continue this email through email, if you prefer? Thanks for your quick reply, April!
~Ms. Yu
The kids are especially interested in how you turn the glass into bricks!
Your idea is brilliant!
Green Glass Green can come to the school for glass pick up when it is 1000+ bottles.
What are the components of the activities you propose in May?
The eco brick factory is too busy for public visit during the Summer. I’m trying to fix a visit in October. Will it suit your schedule too?
Hi April,
We are thinking of starting the glass drive next week to run for 3 weeks. Our school will aim to reach 1000 bottles =) and hopefully more. There are a few components:
1) The students will organize posters and make announcements about the event.
2) We will have glass collection bottles in each class and at the front of the school to collect donations.
3) Also, I wonder if it is possible for your team to come in to make a short presentation about what you do (in either English or PuTongHua) and show the kids a few samples of what your bricks look like.
Yes, it would be great for our Environmental Group to visit your factory in October!
Would we be able to continue our conversation over email? My school email address is: wendy.yu@kingston.edu.hk.
Thanks again! ~Wendy
Ever since I came to live to Hong Kong, I felt bad about not being able to recycle glass. Now I know that I can and will be taking our bottles to one of the collection points. Great initiative, well done!
