{"id":345,"date":"2010-10-23T19:22:31","date_gmt":"2010-10-23T11:22:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greenglass.org.hk\/newsite\/?p=345"},"modified":"2011-11-07T19:22:44","modified_gmt":"2011-11-07T11:22:44","slug":"why-should-glass-be-recycled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenglass.org.hk\/?p=345","title":{"rendered":"Why should glass be recycled?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Glass is made by melting together silica sand the main ingredient and combining soda ash and limestone in a furnace at very high temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>Glass is 100% refillable, reusable and recyclable<\/p>\n<p>Recycle glass containers, the crushed glass cullet can be used for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>blast abrasive, water filtration, bricks, fiberglass, aggregates, asphalt and reflective paints etc;<\/li>\n<li>re-melting new glass containers, flat glass and other creative products.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Glass recycling conserves energy and environment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every tonne of recycled glass used preserves 1.2 tonnes of raw materials. British Glass<\/p>\n<p><strong>HK low recovery rate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2008, HK recovered about 1% of waste glass bottles while Hongkongers dispose about 300 tonne of waste glass in the landfills every day. The recovery figure turned better in 2009 reached 2.6% but HK still far behind Mainland and Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>Waste glass is expected to increase corresponding to the rapid growth of wine consumption, predictably 32% on rise in 2012 in consonance with alcohol tariff lift in 2008 and HK regional wine hub promotion. It implies more glass bottles will be dumped. 5 problems would be resulted:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Landfills get full faster;<\/li>\n<li>Increasing cost of glass disposal;<\/li>\n<li>Quarries and other raw materials are further exploited;<\/li>\n<li>Energy inefficient;<\/li>\n<li>Global warming.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Source: Monitoring of Solid Waste in Hong Kong.
