Notes:

  1. The spots are run with community initiative and Greeners South, a non-profit making NGO taking the lead in management. The community initiative is different from EPD commercial contractors whose operation cost fully covered by public revenue;
  2. Be part of community initiative, respect clean glass recycling and keep the spots tidy and pleasant;
  3. Drop empty glass bottles in daytime (8am to 8pm) to avoid sound disturbance.

    Hi April,

    I met you at the Wan Chai collection point this morning, together with my baby girl Lina.

    I think that Green Glass is a great and important initiative, and there are far too few people aware of it.

    I run a blog called bluebalu and I had posted about the situation of recycling in Hong Kong a while ago: http://bluebalu.com/2014/12/03/recycling-in-hong-kong/ – back then I was not aware that Green Glass exists.

    I would like to publish a new post, introducing my readers to Green Glass.

    Could you send me some more information? I would like to know specifically:

    – Apart from the collection points on your website, are you planning to open a few more?
    – How do the restaurants participate – do they bring their empty bottles to your collection point? Or do you have volunteers collecting the bottles?
    – What happens with the glass, your website talks about HK University and a process to create eco-blocks. Is this currently the only ‘second’ use of glass in HK?
    – You mentioned that you are talking to the government to impose a levy or at least a rule whereby restaurants need to recycle wine bottles to obtain a wine license – is there a way that I and my blog readers can support this? Is there a petition we can sign?
    – How/what can volunteers do to support your great cause?

    Thanks,
    Ruth

    I live in Hoi Ha Village and many of my neighbors and myself drink wine. With all the empty bottles, I’d like to know if there’s any the glass collection bin at Sai Kung and Pak Tam Chung areas?

      I learn gov’t is providing glass collection services towards residential estates. Please call 2784 3970, gov’t residential contractor for arrangement. For the public spot, please check it out via the Waste Less App

      Hope the above info is useful to you.

      Regards,
      April

    Dear Sirs,
    I live in Sai Kung town, where there is no glass collection point. There are many bars and restaurants, wine stores,etc that use many bottles and jars, and residents would certainly appreciate being able to recycle them.

    Can you establish a collection point in the town?
    Thanks and regards,
    Gordon

      Dear Gordon,

      I’m sorry for reply you late. The message was hiding and pops up right now. So here is my reply.
      I was planning to make a proposal for Sai Kung glass recycling since the current Green Glass Green project does not include Sai Kung. I did a few field trips and studies formerly. When I was about to do the proposal for the coming submission by Dec, I was told that the gov’t levy scheme and the big collection contractors would be in place early 2018 and the Sai Kung proposal was unlikely approved in this circumstances. In this regard, I feel sad that I can’t do much for Sai Kung. Hopefully, I can work together to ask for more residential collection spots for this is the govt policy and public spots operated by various gov’t dept. Please update me of your thought via email: info@greenglass.org.hk

      Best regards,
      April

    Can you advise if the paper label of wine bottles and sauce bottles need to be removed prior to disposal into glass recycling bin. If yes, please advise how best to remove these labels. Thanks.

    • greenglass says:

      I learn the machine at eco-brick factory has a function to separate the paper label from the glass. Therefore, I would advise to leave the paper label on unless it is easy for you to remove it.
