I live in SoHo, Central/Sheung Wan area and there are no glass recycling collection points. The one you mentioned on Wellington St has a remark that it only takes certain “brands” of glass bottles..? To have a user-friendly and effective system, you cannot screen glass bottles based on brand. This will not encourage people to bring their glasses to the collection points. When people want to bring their glass bottles to collection points, they are already making an effort. Why make it harder for them by saying “we only accept some but not all glass bottles…”? Also, you should set up more collection points since people are not going to travel out of their way to just bring glass bottles.

Glass recycling is difficult here for there are no tangible rewards from the recyclers, transportation cost to the recyclers is expensive and only few drink brands do the refill in the territories.

About 3 months ago, we submitted proposal to the Central and West District Council for set up collection points at
Soho. It was approved in the C/W District Environmental Protection & Improving Working Group but blocked by the Finance Committee with no time frame.

Cathy, I share with your frustration with the current situation. However, when we look back, glass recycling has been stepping forward. We certainly look forward to get more people conscious of environmental protection and set up more collection points. In this regard, we need you and more people like you to make glass recycling possible in our community.

The nearest pont perhaps is Hong Chi Reh Centre 匡智會. There is also a sauce grocery 醬油舖 near the Tao Po Railway Museum collects beer bottles (http://www.greenglass.org.hk). Hope you find the information helpful.

Thanks for this really useful website – it’s great to strip these issues down to the most simple and practical level: how can the people of Hong Kong make a difference. I sincerely hope that the HKSARG’s waste strategy, endorsed on 25 Jan 2011, will give real momentum to this and many other activities. I would welcome the change to learn more about the activities of Green Glass, and what is planned in the future. Could someone drop me an email? Thanks.

One of the main task we would like to achieve is to share with HK people of why glass recycling is significant to us and nature and how it can be done. There are different stake holders need to be responsible and we are trying to get them on board. Would you join us?

Do you have any clear glass jars that you would like to get rid of? I am looking for these (not bottles) to reuse for crafts such as this http://www.hcfc.org.hk/gbrc/en_tips.php and will be happy to take them off your hands. I need jars that have labels that will peel off (which I can do myself), even if they leave sticky residue. Examples of jars I would like are jam/conserve jars, pickled veg jars.
I am happy to collect from you but sometimes some places are just a bit too far to travel to so please don’t be offended if I decline.
    Many thanks

Hi, I live in Tsuen Wan and there are a number of pubs around Yeung Uk Rd and Ho Pui Street Market. Everynight I heard the pubs workers disposed glass bottles in a dumper and I believe eventually they will all gone to landfill and I find it is very wasteful. Is there any thing your organization can do to save the glass bottles? Any action can cooperate with those pubs to keep up the bottles and use for recycling?

    • Geoff Barnett says:

Tsuen, do you think our compact glass bottle crushers may have a place at these pubs? Check us out and let me know if you can think of a company that may be interested in representing us in HK. http://www.expleco.com

I have been keeping used glass bottles at home and I hope that there are collection points in Yuen Long so as to support the recycling project.

Can you send someone to collect the glass bottle in Kornhill Quarrybay? Do I need to save a lots of stock or even a few you can collect? or please advise the near station?

  7. Michelle says:

I can’t seem to find the list with collection points in English. I live in Kowloon, do you have any collection points in Mong Kok or nearby districts? I’ve been saving bottles for quite some time and reusing them but I have more than I can reuse now. Thanks in advance for the info!

    • april says:

The one in Mongkok is closed at the moment. Hopefully KUC at Jordan will be open soon. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  8. Mae says:

May I ask where can Tung Chung residents recycle their glass bottles. Is there a collection point?
